Top Gun: Maverick secures six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, but they’re getting a divided response from the internet.
Top Gun: Maverick has secured six Oscar nominations ahead of the 2023 Academy Awards, but the internet is divided in its opinions on the nominations. Top Gun: Maverick was released in 2022 as the long-awaited sequel to 1986’s Top Gun. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film starred Tom Cruise as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell 30 years after the events of the original film and featured Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Bashir Salahuddin, and Jon Hamm among its star-studded casting list. The film made just shy of $1.5 billion worldwide at the box office, a mark that finished as the second-highest of 2022 behind Avatar: The Way of Water.
The Academy has announced its list of 2023 Oscar nominations, and though Top Gun: Maverick hauled in six nominations, the response from the internet has been divided. Top Gun: Maverick got Oscar nominations for Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Achievement in Music Written For Motion Pictures, Best Sound, Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Motion Picture of the Year, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Why Top Gun: Maverick Was Considered One Of The Best Films Of 2022?
There is a lot of goodwill following Top Gun: Maverick as awards season gets underway. The film received a lot of credit since its premiere for being a non-superhero movie bringing audiences back to movie theaters after the COVID-19 pandemic played a massive role in declining box-office results. In addition to that goodwill, Top Gun: Maverick was a visual stunner. Tom Cruise’s dedication to practical stunts, including work inside the cockpit, went a long way to making the film stand out as the best blockbuster action-adventure film during the summer of 2022. Doing practical stunts also allowed the filmmakers the opportunity to create a more rich audio experience, which the film also got an Oscar nomination for.
Top Gun: Maverick‘s Best Screenplay Oscar nomination is one of the few surprising nods that the film got, as the actual story of the film is considered to be one of its weaker aspects. Though much of the story didn’t stand out, Top Gun: Maverick‘s crowd-pleasing ending certainly could have played a role in the film getting more praise for its screenplay than most would have expected. Beyond screenplay, though, very few audience members would push back against Top Gun: Maverick receiving critical and industry acclaim for its gorgeous stunts and atmosphere. Some have even taken issue with the film not getting a Best Cinematography nomination, which is understandable.
How Will Top Gun: Maverick Perform At Oscars 2023?
Given the sheer number of nominations that Top Gun: Maverick has already gotten, the Oscars are already set up to be a big win for the film, the cast, the crew, and its producers. Given how stunning many of the action sequences were in the film, the Top Gun sequel could be in line to secure wins for technical aspects, like Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Achievement in Visual Effects. Regardless of how the film does at the Academy Awards in March, a Top Gun 3 is still hoped to be on the table. With how much success Top Gun: Maverick experienced, it seems like a lock, but some Oscar hardware wouldn’t hurt matters.
