WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — West Lafayette police carted more than 4,000 cans of powder infant formula from Simply Self Storage on Dec. 6.
Boone County Sheriff’s Office tipped police off about the storage, West Lafayette police Lt. Jon Eager said.
West Lafayette detectives now are trying to find out where the formula was purchased and by whom, Eager said.
Detectives are working with retailers trying match the formula to a specific retailer in hopes of then tracking the purchase to specific individuals, Eager said.
The baby formula is the legitimate product and has not been tampered with, Eager said, but detectives suspect the baby formula was acquired by fraud from legitimate retailers. They also suspect the formula was destined for illegal resale.
The case remains under investigation, Eager said.
