Three Carolina housing markets named among top 10 to watch in 2023

CHARLOTTE — Three metros in the Carolinas have earned a spot on the National Association of Realtors’ annual list of the 10 real estate markets to watch in the upcoming year and beyond. In fact, all 10 real estate markets on the list are found in the South. Charlotte, however, is not among them.

Raleigh-Durham holds the highest spot of any North Carolina or South Carolina metro on the list, coming in at No. 2. Greenville, South Carolina, places at No. 5, with Charleston at No. 6.

The Atlanta metro ranks as the top U.S. real estate market expected to outperform in 2023, followed by Dallas at No. 3 and Fayetteville in Arkansas-Missouri at No. 4. Taking the Nos. 7-10 spots, respectively, are the metros of Huntsville, Alabama; Jacksonville, Florida; San Antonio, Texas; and Knoxville, Tennessee.

NAR chose its 10 real estate markets to watch in 2023 based on how they stacked up to the national average on 10 economic indicators. The trade association used the following criteria: better housing affordability; greater numbers of renters who can afford to buy a median-priced home; stronger job growth; faster growth of information industry jobs; higher shares of the information industry in the respective local GDPs; migration gains; shares of workers teleworking; faster population growth; faster growth of active housing inventory; and smaller housing shortages.
